Mary Jo Tippeconnic Fox (Comanche; Ph.D., 1982, University of Arizona) (AIS)., an enrolled member of the Comanche Nation, is an Associate Professor of American Indian Studies (AIS) at the University of Arizona (UA), Tucson, Arizona.
She is the former Director/ Chair of AIS and also served in the position of Associate Director. From 1999 to 2006, she held the appointment of Associate to the President for American Indian Affairs and Ambassador to American Indian Nations. Prior to joining AIS, she was Assistant Vice-President for Minority Student Affairs at the UA.
Her scholarly activity focuses on American Indian women’s issues and roles, historical and contemporary, American Indian education, with a special focus on higher education, and Indian gaming. Her latest publication is Serving Native American Students, a New Directions for Student Services monograph and an article on Traditional Feminism.
Dr. Tippeconnic Fox has extensive experience working with Native communities throughout the United States, and she is active with many organizations including the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) and the Western Social Science Association (WSSA). She teaches courses on American Indian Education, American Indian Higher Education, American Indian Women and American Indian Gaming.
