He possesses the critical thinking skills and professional competencies in research practice and advocacy that a future healthcare leader should have to tackle health disparity challenges. As a former health educator and health literacy researcher, I observed how he artfully blended Hopi knowledge with western scientific methods, translated and communicated terms, and challenged investigators to be ethical when Hopi community members were interviewed. As a researcher he has exemplified strong communication skills presenting at national and international conferences, managing diverse personalities on multicultural, multi-disciplinary teams, and utilizing problem-solving and analytical skills as a member of Dr. O’Rourke’s team. I saw a curiosity and a capacity for self-improvement I see in very goal focused first-generation students, with highly developed work ethic, initiative and resilience rooted in a life changing moment or person. In Adam’s case, it was his grandmother, who molded his character and perseverance.
